There is still the registry key "MaxOpenFiles" which you can set but I don't remember what the upperbound is (maybe 1024 or 2048). It also may depend on the application you are running or the processes ulimit setting (check output from "ulimit -a") Programs can modify the max number of open files on a per-process basis.
