Cannot install SUA SDK in Vista RC1

 Cannot install SUA SDK in Vista RC1 - Sep. 13, '06, 1:04:49 PM

I have downloaded the latest SUA SDK for Vista and Longhorn from Microsoft site. But install fails saying SUA is not enabled.
In CONTRL PANEL, the SUA check box is ticked. Back in 2003 R2, the SUA service is shown in Administrative Tools. But I do not see this service in Vista RC1.
Has anyone run into this situation ?

I saw it. Disabled SUA, rebooted, then reenabled SUA. It worked then. So far I've not been able to get any type of pkg_add or pkg_update to work, but that is a different point.

I just activated an RC1 last night and installed the SDK.
(The SDK is still the R2 SDK BTW).
The renaming and reorganizing of things is Vista is frustrating!
To install SUA you need to start Control Panel, select Programs and
Features, then choose Turn Windows Features On or Off.
This is the selection point for Subsystem for Unix-based Applications.
Is this what you did?
What Service were you looking for? There isn't any that I can see.

Right, that's because of the uname() API returning the wrong value.
It was close to getting fixed for RC1, but just missed. It's corrected for
the next build (I was just told this last night).
For Vista only, for now, to install packages you need to use the "older"
method instead of pkg_update. This method is still valid -- just
more typing; less automated.
To add a package use pkg_add and specify the whole URL. For example:
pkg_add ftp://ftp.interopsystems.com/pkgs/6.0-x86/bash-current-bin.tgz
All dependencies will be installed at the same time as happens with pkg_update.

I got the same problem on a Vista Server.
So do I Need to remove SUA reboot and re-install it again before installing the SDK?

I asked the MS folks about this. They had two comments.
One is that the correct SDK for RC1 only became available on the 13th.
Installing an SDK downloaded before this would result in wrong things happening.
Two is that you may have an old key sitting in the registry. Though I'm not sure
how this is to happen since the RC1 install didn't allow for an "upgrade" path.
Check you have HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SUA\AppsInstalled\Sua Subsystem in the
registry.
As a point of interest RC1 does contain most of the utility updates. The man pages
are getting updated later. So many of the utilities have more options. Many of
these match the updates at /Tools (no surprise). Yes, there are a few bugs with
a couple of them and this is being worked on. But don't let that stop you from
reporting anything you find odd/broken. If you don't want to report it to MS then
report it to me (in Forum or e-mail).
