What are the directory permissions on /usr/local and crew?
"ls -ld /usr /usr/local /usr/local/include"
Also which user are you doing this as ? ("id -D")

I'm getting the same problem & error message as daveboyd - can't seem to install the bind package.
I've tried with the csh/tcsh, ksh, bash & zsh shells.
Also, trying to install bind seems to have broken dig & whois.
Here are my folder permissions:
drwxrwxr-x 1 Administrator +Administrators 0 Oct 11 09:49 /usr
drwxrwxr-x 1 Administrator +Administrators 0 Oct 11 10:20 /usr/local
drwxrwxr-x 1 Administrator +Administrators 0 Oct 11 12:41 /usr/local/include
Also, I've only got the one user and I appear to be in the following groups:
None
Everyone
Debugger Users
PasswordPropDeny
Administrators
Users
INTERACTIVE
Authenticated Users
CurrentSession
LOCAL
I haven't had any problem with other packages - any ideas what I'm doing wrong here?

I should have also asked daveboyd for the output from "uname -X"
(this gives the version of Interix and also of Windows)
> I've tried with the csh/tcsh, ksh, bash & zsh shells
Sorry, I'm unclear for this statement: these ones installed okay or not okay?

My apologies; all those shell packages installed fine - what I meant was I have tried using the "pkg_update -L bind" command from within each of those shells, and got the same error message as daveboyd from each one.
Here's the result of "uname -X":
System = Interix
Node = jaredspc
Release = 3.5
Version = SP-8.0.1969.1
Machine = x86
Processor = Pentium II Celeron (rev0x0605)
HostSystem = Windows
HostRelease = SP2
HostVersion = 5.1
I should also note that I'm actually running an iMac running Max OS X with XP Pro running as a Parallels virtual machine (convoluted I know - my work machine requires a very particular setup).

Okay I think I see the problem now. You (Rayblx, and likely daveboyd) are
running Windows 5.1 which is W2K3/SP2 with the 8.0.1969.1 build of the
system. You should install the hotfix KB899522 which has a fix for
shells running on W2K3 (yes, it speaks to SP1, but I think SP2 too).
