I grabbed the X11R6.6 binaries tar archive and tried to install it on my system. The README isn' t kidding when it says the distro is " raw" , but this is going a bit far![:' (]

I can unload the tar archive to a safe place in the file system (a little tricky, since the archive is absolute, not relative), but it' s impossible to tell what directory layout was intended when the package was built. For example, what directory layout do the Imake templates assume? The one in the tar archive, or something else?

Is it even possible for this distro to coexist with the X11R5 stuff that came with SFU, or should I scrap the X11R5 content and just unpack the X11R6.6 the way it comes from the archive? Will it even *run* that way?

Hi,

I must confess I just closed my eyes and hoped for the best, untarring directly to the absolute directories. Luckily this ' moron' approach seemed to work fine. The original R5 stuff seems to stay undisturbed in /usr/X11R5, the R6 release gets put directly in /bin/X11, /usr/lib/X11 etc (as far as I can make out, I didn' t do an in-depth analysis). Anyway, it all seems to have worked. I suspect you can probably even revert to the R5 release just by adjusting paths to point to /usr/X11R5, although don' t take my word on this.

I heard the same thing from someone else (i.e. close your eyes and pray), but I saw mixed results that way. (Sometimes running a configure script would detect X11R5 instead of R6.)

So I sucked it up and bit the bullet. I used " pax" to re-root the tar archive into /opt/X11R6, copied /usr/X11R5/lib/X11/config/Interix.cf to the new config dir (/opt/X11R6/lib/X11/config) and changed configdirspec to point to that directory, tweaked imake.cf in the config dir to detect Interix and call the Interix.cf file, and then tweaked /opt/X11R6/bin/X11/xmkmf script to call the right imake. Then I updated my PATH to mention /opt/X11R6/bin/X11.

Works just fine.
