Things have clarified with some additional checks and testing by Microsoft
and others for KB841872 as it relates to notice MS04-020.
As mentioned before KB841872 is a security patch. It relates to the notice
MS40-020. The patch is intended for NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 because for these
systems the old Posix subsystem shipped with them. The old Posix subsystem did
not ship with Windows XP or 2003. MS04-020 specifically relates to the old Posix
subsystem only. The notice MS04-020 will be updated shortly to indicate that it
does not apply to Interix/SFU 3.0 or 3.5.
The additional tests show that KB841872 does detect SFU/Interix 3.0 & 3.5
correctly when they are installed on Windows 2000 and NT 4.0. So it has been
determined now that it is safe to allow KB841872 to be applied.
If you discover that after a reboot that the Interix system is not running then
the most likely reason is something has adjusted registry entries. But KB841872
is not the cause as it doesn't make such a change.

Hi there:
I applied this patch to a Windows 2000/SP4 system with SFU installed and it does not seem to apply. The PSXSS.EXE file which is contained in the patch is in the dll cache but it does not update in the C:\WINNT|SYSTEM32 directory. I renamed the PSXSS.EXE file and rebooted which forced Windows File Protection to install the new PSXSS.EXE file fromm the patch but SFU would no longer work. A reinstall of SFU 3.5 worked but it replaced the PSXSS.EXE file with the one it came with.
Can you assist.

Hello again:
I read your post again and I re-read the MS Article and the file gets installed in C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE not SYSTEM32 the patch applies correctly.

Just for clarity I state again:
- the patch is now safe to apply to systems with SFU/Interix installed
- the patch does not apply to SFU/Interix since SFU/Interix does not have the
buffer overflow problem the patch is being applied for
So with SFU/Interix installed, if you see no change in the PSXSS.EXE file for size/date
after applying the patch then this is fine & expected.
