Error message when trying to port several apps:
checking for GTK - version >= 1.2.0... no
*** The gtk-config script installed by GTK could not be found.
*** If GTK was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the GTK_CONFIG environment variable to the
*** full path to gtk-config.
*** GTK+ is available from ftp://ftp.gtk.org/pub/gtk
configure: error: Test for GTK failed.
Is it so that you'll get this script if you install from source? That
at least seems to be the common consesus on the Net.
Latest stabel source is Version 2.4.9. Current: Version gtk+ of 2.4.1.3 for
Interix 3.5. Anyhow, tried several versions. ./configure always ends with:
checking for XOpenDisplay in -lX11... no
configure: error: *** libX11 not found. Check 'config.log' for more details.
libX11 must be there. What am I doing wrong? (Why is there no source on the warehouse?)

The script "gtk-config" is an old GNU configure method. Hasn't
been used for a long time. GTK+ 2.X.Y doesn't use the old method
since it's keeping up to date. Because this question has been asked
several time before I placed a "gtk-config" script on the ftp site
in the pub directory:
ftp://ftp.interopsystems.com/pub/gtk-config
It will output version 1.2.10. You can adjust it as fits your needs.
The "gtk-config" script isn't part of GTK+ 2 so it's not part of the source
or the binary. GTK+ gets updated with minor tweaks regularly. Rebuilding it
is a major pain in the a** usually. 2.4.1.3 was the nicest version I'd met
so far. Perhaps the more recent versions are nicer. But there most apps deal
fine with this version. At some point I'll sync an update.

Yup, libX11 is part of the SFU CD: X11R5 and X11R6. X11R6 is part of the regular release
so it's not my support point anymore. But the sources are still on the ftp site for the
Interix 3.0 build (src/X11R6.6). If you don't have X11 installed (look in /usr/X11)
then you can add the components now that get all the parts installed (GNU utils, Interix
SDK and Interix GNU SDK). Just restart the install and select from the component tree (you
would have seen it when doing a custom install before) the aforementioned parts.

Thank you as ever! I see the output is the same on Linux 9.1. Actually, the
configure script for the Firebird browser was insisting on this one. Managed
to adopt the script to gtk+ 2.4.1.3, so now I'll have to look at all the
parsing errors.
It would really be nice to have an X-based web browser for Interix. Should
solve lots of annoying Windows problems (security, no ActiveX, no spyware)
-- and GNUS/Emacs with sockets for news (sic!). (The emacs 21.2 port source
code contains lots of errors ...)

Hi, I have been using several programs under Fedora which apparently relied on gtk-config. These programs, notably aMule, compiled and ran fine under Core 2 and Core 3 test 2, but when I installed Core 3 test 3 about ten days ago, I couldn't compile these programs, getting the "can't find gtk-config" error message. I downloaded the copy of gtk-config that is online here and copied it to /usr/bin, but the programs still won't compile. I looked at the file but I am unsure as to exactly what I need to change to make it work on my system. Any suggestions?

This site is focused on Interix/SFU issues.
We don't delve into Linux-specific issues.
There should be gobs of Linux newsgroups and web sites that can help you
for this Linux/Fedora specific question.
