1 domain controler windows 2003 server with SFu 3.5 NIS/active directory
1 file server windows 2003 server with SFU 3.5 NFS (2 P4 2.6Ghz HT, 1Go ram, SAN hitachi 9500)
linux (red hat 9) and windows 2000 clients.
There are no problem with windows clients, but, sometimes, with linux, the logon time and session are very slow (in text and graphic mode)..the home directory of linux clients is on the file server. the problem come with large mount (1600) and session of linux clients (50) on the File Server, SFU (nfs service) is overloaded : all linux clients are slowed down, windows clients are OK...
How many clients SFu can support?...we'll have 150 linux clients in future. What tools can I use on windows to see NFS performance on File Server and what tuning can I do on this File Server ? I read "performance tuning guidelines for Microsoft Services for Network File, System " , what parameters use to resolve these problems ?

Are you using password sycnhronization in this environment?
I ask because I'm wondering if the problem causing your slowdown is
related to UID/GID lookup/authorization.

password synchronization is activate for windows --> unix. You think it's the AD/NIS Server overloaded ? I need tool to monitoring activity of the NIS and NFS server..when the pb comes, server are not physically overloaded (cpu =25% , lot of free memory ). it's difficult know what is the problem without tools? what can i use ? is there a plugin for perfmon for monitoring NIS service of SFU?
N.B : i'll try to install User name mapping on file server, maybe it's a solution..

I'm not sure. It was a "narrow it down" sort of question.
I was going to ask about user name mapping as well, but forgot.
You write that you are going to try user name mapping. I think
this would be a good sol'n. It's always recommended to do the
user name mapping when using NFS. I think that there is a good
chance that will improve things.

With things being slow this usually indicates that "something" is waiting
for information (usually over the network) from another source (or machine).
Another PDC being looked for (or something like that) trying to resolve a
username or UID/GID or password auth.
I don't know of a plug-in for monitoring NIS with perfmon.
From the Linux side you should be able us some of the packet sniffing
software to see what's is being communicated.

thanks for reply...i already use "user name mapping", but it's installed only on my 2 AD/NIS servers, not on 2 file servers. i read that it's possible install "user name mapping" on multiple server for load balancing request...
