Altiris can run in windows xp professional. Is the net use function still available in the windows xp professional cmd. or is it a bad filename. many of my students ask me that, and if so where could they find the IP address of the main server without getting into the admin account?

All of the Win32 "net" commands are still available on XP.
There have been some changes since W2K, but not radical.
Your second question is unclear to me.
Are you asking how to determine the machine that is providing Active
Directory (AD) services to a workstation? or something else?
