Sorry for this inch to write. AMD Athlon 64, AMD Opteron, Intel Xeon with EM64T and Intel Pentium 4 with EM64T will surely run 32-bit code natively. So perhaps 32-bit
Interix won't pose any problems.

But, according to Bill Gates, by the end of the year, we'll all go 64-bits.

What about Interix? And what about Unicode (UTF) (NT had it from the start in '93)

Quite annoys me, running Linux 64-bits, and soon Solaris for x64/x86.

The only thing that can be said (written really) is "stay tuned".
More than this is NDA territory, sorry.

Internally, microsoft should be working on a version of Interix that is
64bit. But the problem is that the Window's 64bit programming model
conflicts with the UNIX/Interix 64bit model.
So there are probably some interesting issues with using MSVC compilers
since MSVC will have the Windows bias. Hopefully MSVC will have a
switch to enable the UNIX model. If not, then gcc is the natural
compiler. But the SFU team has no gcc compiler experienced people.
Needless to say, there are some tricky issues for Interix.

I'd be surprised if Microsoft could provide a 64bit Interix environment
within the first year after 64bit Window's ships.
It would be very cool if they did. But don't hold your breath.

That means SFU will not runs on the new Windows XP Professional x64? Or runs there the 32 bit Version of SFU?

Microsoft does not support SFU running on XP Pro with 64-bit hardware.

So you can try, but essentially you are on your own.
There was another /Tools Forum thread about trying to use gcc
(32-bit based) on the AMD 64-bit chips. The resulting 32-bit binary
had the problem of tripping some AMD 64-bit stack checking.

SFU 3.5 isn't being supported any more AFAIK. If you want 64-bit, you probably have to move to SUA 5.2 on W2K3 R2 x64 (although even there the 64-bit isn't as well supported as the 32-bit).

32-bit support is going to be around for a LONG time... IIRC, they're only just now getting rid of legacy 16-bit support!

No nothing has changed. 64-bit's will be only a "go forward" thing (W2K3/R2, Vista,...).

SFU3.5 continues to be supported by Microsoft, but there is no development with it.
If there is a bug then hotfixes will still be released. But the argument I put forward
for XP-64 getting labelled as a bug fix didn't go anywhere

SFU as a product being developed ends at version 3.5. Support continues until something like 2009
and extended support until 2011. The SFU 3.5 download will continue to be available for several years.
The reason devlopment of SFU has stopped is that the components have been "absorbed" into the Windows OS
starting with W2K3/R2. For Interix this is version 5.2. Version 6.0 is in Vista.

Sorry, I meant "not being developed".

...and in W2k3 R2 and forward it is now known as "SUA" (Services for UNIX-based Applications). So, technically, "Interix" will be part of Vista (and is part of W2k3 R2).

If you have W2k3 R2, you install it via Add/Remove Windows Components... it's pretty cool (but the SDK is a seperate download).
