Can XFree86 4.x be ported to SFU 3 easily?

Thanks!

XFree86 is an X-server which requires access to the video hardware. This access is not available via Interix subsystem in SFU.

Could something similar to Cygwin/X be done in SFU?

Cygwin/X consists of an X Server(xfree86), X libraries, and nearly all of the standard X clients, such as xterm, xhost, xdpyinfo, xclock, and xeyes.

Interix already provides all of this except the X server.

There is no reason to port Xfree86 to SFU because many Xservers already exist and run on the Windows platform. Even if you could hypothetically port Xfree86 to Interix, there would be no functional difference between the two.

Sorry I should' ve made myself clear, I am looking for a FREE X server on Windows, unfortunately all the implementations I' ve seen are commercial except Cygwin/X and WeirdX, which can' t really be used at production level.

I think SFU provides a very good porting platform. Do you see any major technical difficulties in porting the X Server part of Cygwin/X to Interix (Can much of the GDI code from Cygwin/X be reused)?

If you want a " free" X server on Windows, you could install cygwin and then install the cygwin X server.

I have installed it once and it did work, but I personally didn' t like it. Perhaps there was some kind of configuration that I could have tweaked to make it more palatable, but I never had the patience to find out.

I also tried the MI-X (from micro images) version but it seg faulted the first time I tried to use it.

The simplest versions (to install, run, configure) that I' ve used are X-Win32, Exceed and Reflection-X.

There is _no_ way to port any X-server to the Interix environment.
Any X-server on a Windows platform will have to be a Windows subsystem based application.

Can anyone with real-world experience comment on the following X server products, as partners for SFU/Interix 3.5?

1) Desktop-X http://www.x-solutions.com/Store/DesktopX.php

2) X-Win32 http://www.x-solutions.com/Store/X-Win32.php

3) Interop X Server 9.0 for SFU/Interix http://www.interopsystems.com/detail.aspx?ID=4

Like others, I am looking for a low cost, small footprint X server designed to make the most of Interix. I found Exceed too overwhelming for my system, so I am none too sure about trying another Hummingbird variant :)

CygwinX is great, but I was hoping to avoid installing yet another subsystem if I could get away with it.

I tried the Desktop-X demo package, which seemed the closest match, but apparently it does not detect version 3.5 as a valid version of SFU.

Any experience you have to share will be very welcome.

Just try the/demo the regular X-win32.
It has a small footprint too.
The Desktop-X demo is just now apparently being updated to SFU 3.5 It should be available soon.
Interop is at Linux World right now and we just talked to the StarNet/X-Win32 people to confirm this

It has just been suggested to me that you should visit the web site:
http://www.starnet.com/
and look for the products link and then the downloads link. This will get you the most current version.

Thanks Rodney, I have downloaded and am using X-Win32 as we speak. It is indeed a small footprint! I will stay tuned for the update of the Desktop-X variant per your suggestions.
