Is there a way to create keys to eliminate the need for the clear text login id and password?

With openssh there is. It's done all of the time.

To quote myself from another thread:
Here's what I do and it works:
- two machines: 'A' and 'B' both running Interix OpenSSH current
- on 'A' (client side) I ran ssh-keygen -t rsa
- then I sftp B and put the ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub from 'A' to 'B' as file ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

Voila.
