Cannot Create a Crontab - Sep. 21, '05, 1:43:42 PM

I'm trying to set up my first crontab, but it isn't working. When I type "crontab -l", I'm prompted with, "Warning: User ... does not have a valid password registered... to register it, please use 'crontab -p".

Ok, simple enough. But when I do this, it seems to take the password, yet entering "crontab -l" at this point yields the same result as before: an error. Apparently the password was not really set, even though NO error was given when I used crontab -p.

One piece to the puzzle might be that I have not specified a password for the Administrator account within Windows 2000. This is deliberate. I do not wish to have one. But is this causing my problem.

I tried to set up another account, one in which I COULD set up a password, but when I attempt to use the useradd command, I get the error message, "useradd: command not found." And this even from the /usr/examples/admin directory!

Ok, obviously I've done something wrong. Can anyone tell me what it is?

Thanks!

The Administrator account not having a password is not good (as you are aware of).
And yes, a empty password setting things up isn't valid.

The useradd et al commands that ship in the /usr/examples/admin directory won't work.
They were written for Interix 2.2 (during the Softway days). They continued to ship in 3.0 and 3.5
unchanged. So, don't try and use them.
What you can do is use the updated versions (supplied by Mark). They are in a /Tools package that
you can install now. Once installed you'll find then in /usr/local/sbin.

do "pkg_update -L admin_scripts" to get the package installed.

I checked on the Tools page, but I didn't see what you describe. Do you recall which package it was?

Thanks again.

It's called "admin_scripts". That's why I wrote:

It's not listed on the web page but it's on the ftp site.

I found the package on the FTP site. Thanks. And you're right, it does not exist on the web page.

I placed the zipped file in /usr/local and unzipped it. This created /usr/local/sbin, placed useradd userdel and usemod into that directory and three more files in /usr/local: +COMMENT, +CONTENTS and +DESC. I'm not sure if unzipping the file duplicated the pkg_update command or not, so I tried it both ways.

However, when I attemtpt to do "pkg_update -L admin_scripts", the system states, "pkg_update: Command not found."

I reloaded Windows Services For UNIX, but it doesn't help the situation.

Sorry, I'm used to the fact that most people have loaded the installer from the
/Tools Warehouse already. There's a "bootstrap script" to do this. The web page
below has a more full explanation:
http://www.interopsystems.com/tools/pkg_install.htm

After that all of the binary software packages can be installed, updated, etc.

Rodney,

A lot of my problems stem from the fact that the computer onto which I need to install these packages sits on a closed LAN with no FTP access. To remedy this, I've sent in an e-mail request to order the /Tools Toolworks CD. This should make things much easier.

Thank you *very* much for your time and patience. I'm new, but I'll soon have the hang of things.

Cheers!

:-) thanks

Yes it should. Though I'll note that the admin_scripts package was added to the site after the last Toolsworks release.
So, of course, it won't be on the CD yet.
But you can install the copy of the package you have.
