The updated tar does not appear to have been installed with the bootstrap of the installer.
...which is odd.

When you ran the bootstrap installer script did you have any problem?
Try re-running the script with the option "clobber" and then trying again.

When bootstrapping first time I had a home path with space.
I then reset so now:

echo $home gives:
/dev/fs/C/SFU/HOME

yet:
echo $PKG_PATH gives
PKG_PATH: Undefined variable.

rerunning:
sh pkg-current-bin35.sh -clobber
gives:

/Tools bootstrap installation of the 'pkg' installer.

The clobber option is just "clobber", no "-" (dash).
So "sh pkg-current-bin25.sh clobber".

[the mail server seems off today; I just got notice of this now]

The message is different than before. Tar is okay now.
So the original issue is now cleared.

The new issue appears to be that the ftp server isn't getting contacted
to get new packages. Do you have a firewall on?
If you do by hand at a prompt "ftp ftp.interopsystems.com" what happens?

Before clopping manual ftp worked fine.

Turning of windows XP firewall does not help.
I dont think thats the issue. My firefox fireFTP works fine.

Thanx for prompt advice

While you have downloaded the bash package you have done so in isolation.
The package depends on several other packages being installed at the same time.
When they are not found locally then the installer tries to find them from the
ftp site.

Check the /etc/resolv.conf file to see that the nameserver is correctly specified.
This might be the cause of ftp not finding the ftp site.

There is the well-known problem of the /etc/resolv.conf not getting properly
initialized with non-English systems (DHCP clients too).
The /etc/resolv.conf file has the same purpose as on other Unix systems.
It provides information about which DNS to consult. No IP numbers then
no reference to consult.

Find the IP number of your DNS machine and add this to the end of
the line "nameserver" (i.e. "nameserver 192.168.0.1").

How do I find the IP number of my DNS machine?
How should the full /etc/resolv.conf file look like
on my PC running SFU?

If you run the command ipconfig you should get the information.
This is a Win32 program, but there it can be run from an Interix shell.
The line that has something about "IP address" will be the used with nameserver.
The line with "DNS suffix" will be used with "search".
The output format of ipconfig varies widely depending on the language locale,
so the wordings may be different.

It should look something like:
search foofoo.com
nameserver 192.168.0.1

I get this:
/dev/fs/C/SFU/HOME> ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

PPP adapter LB2:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.1.2.249
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.1.2.249

How should my /etc/resolv.conf file then look ?

It looks like you have your connection a PPP with a dialup.
The information from ipconfig looks like junk. Did you
run it while you were connected? (i.e. it gets updated while
you are connected).

Let's try just removing all of the lines from the /etc/resolv.conf
file so that the file is empty. When resolv.conf isn't filled ftp
should try to see what the registry has.

Still:
/dev/fs/C/SFU/HOME> ftp ftp.interopsystems.com

64 bytes from 64.235.106.194: icmp_seq=1 ttl=235 time=1093.75 ms

/dev/fs/C/SFU/HOME> ping mail.yahoo.com

64 bytes from 209.73.168.74: icmp_seq=1 ttl=55 time=1015.62 ms

Why can ping find a DNS without a DN server when ftp cannot ???

Try running from the command line whilst connected (as Rodney has suggested, it appears you are using PPP over dialup):

ipconfig /all

Dig through the output (there will be a line/section with "DNS Servers" for the heading).
I would add this IP address to the /etc/resolv.conf file but Interix will try to connect to this server when doing any name lookup - even if you're not connected. This could cause the system to pause - and time out - whilst it tries to connect to a (non-contactable) DNS server.

This is just from experience from when I used PPP over dialup a little while back - if in fact you have a USB modem with a PPPoE connection (some ADSL connections are PPPoE), then you may want lookups to happen this way (ie. on demand).

Phil.

Thanx indeed. I actually use a CDMA phone with USB connection.

Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-53-45-00-00-00
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No

How would you recommend my /etc/resolv.conf file should look like then ?

Dear friend Phil Pgtong and rodney:

Thanx for your help.
pkg_add and ftp works fine now.
Have added > 30 packages.
It seems that one may have 'almost' UNIX
