I'm using a couple of IRC clients, bitchx and xaric. They worked previously until I joined a domain, and now my user name is prepended with either the domain name or the local computer name. Most IRC servers don't like seeing the extra info in the username, e.g. "KOMPUTEN+wysoft" for my local machine, and call it an "invalid username," preventing me from joining.
Is there a way to strip the leading information from the username for some processes without modifying the application's code?

Yes.
Change the registry entry for PrincipalDomain in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Services for Unix
to the local machine name. If the key doesn't exist (and it likely doesn't) then create it.
The key is a string.
Now reboot for the change to take effect.

Thanks Rodney. I noticed that setting the env variable USER to just "wysoft" also temporarily removed the leading text for certain programs.

Depends on the program.
Any program that's grabbing environment variables can be "tricked" just by changing that var.
But others using the API's (e.g. getpwuid(getuid())) won't fall for this.
The registry change aligns this. Refer to the "getpdomain" manual page for more info.
