Will we get an xterm (256 color and 88 color support) in /tools?

It already exists. That's the xterm package. It's built against X11R6.8.2 libraries.
Set the environment variable TERM to match which behavior you want.

Probably not.
Even after setting TERM=xterm-256color, the 256color2.pl script from the vttest/ directory in the xterm source distribution doesn't show a 6x6 colour grid, but only the regular 16 colours. I think the 256color configure option is needed before building xterm. 88color2.pl also doesn't work. I tried compiling my own xterm with 256color and 88color options and that version works well.
