Starting another thread on this
It seems that Windows 2003 R2 is a Windows Server 2003 SP1 plus a second CD with addons. The second CD have the Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications (SUA). Also: Utilities and Software Development Kit (SDK) for Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications states a system requirement of either Windows Server 2003 SP1 or Windows Server 2003 R2.
So the question is: Is it possible to install SUA on Windows 2003 SP1?
If so, will it perhaps be released as a standalone package for SP1?
Or is there some new functionality in the core of R2 which makes SUA incompatible with SP1?
A fact is: You need an english version of Windows 2003 to install the second CD.
Am I right or out in the blue?

The second CD upgrades W2K3 server SP1 to R2.
SUA (Interix 5.2) only runs on R2. There are kernel changes to support changed functionality.
This is especially true with the 64-bit version.
The Requirements list is not an "or" list. It's an "and" list.
You need W2K3/SP1 and R2 from RC0..RTM.

no.

no. I was told by MS that once something ships as part of the base distribution (and R2
now counts as that) the individual parts will not ship as individual parts.

The intent is actually the other way around. There was new functionality added to support SUA.
As mentioned before this is most true with the 64bit W2K3/R2. Interix was only running on the
32-bit systems before because the kernel was lacking "something" (yeah, big hand wave, but it
could be a whole topic unto itself). But for both 32 and 64 bit the new mixed mode applications
needed changes outside of the Interix subsystem. And for this reason it cannot be run on earlier
versions of the Windows Operating System (which is different from Win32).

I expect this is just the early RTM thing. Official shippings aren't until January, 2006.
SFU/Interix has been doing Japanese since 3.0. I was told at one point other languages
are going to be getting localization support because it's part of the base release. I think
there are a core of 12 languages. However, there are likely to be limits for something.
Anyway, SFU has been installed on many other languages to date. Some that I know of are
French, German, Polish, Russian, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish. But it is not localized for
these languages, so the man pages have remained in English.
The Jan 7, 2005 release is not the last Utility/SDK release.
There will be others (dates unknown) after January.
