I have a system that performs batch processing for my company. It is running Windows 2k3 server, and SFU 3.5, with no service packs that I'm aware of. (I'm a developer, not the sys admin, who is out of the office this week.) The source code is compiled under Interix 3.5.
The batch process is running within a ksh window, and shells off to run OS commands such as "rm", "mv", and "chmod" during the run, by using the C "system()" call. The commands are executed on files and directories that the batch process creates. The problem we are having is that at some undetermined interval, the OS commands appear to stop returning back to the calling program. At that time, you can observe multiple ksh tasks in the windows Task Manager, where there was only one before, and if you perform a ps -eaf in a ksh window, you can see the specific OS commands as tasks still sitting there. (like zombies) At this point, the batch processing is unresponsive, waiting for the system() function to return.
If I kill the most "child" process, the processing will continue to failure, due to the locked command in question not executing properly.
The system has had this problem for at least a year that I am aware of, and has required reboots on the order of once every couple of days. But, as of last week, it has suddenly gotten decidedly worse, and now can only get through three or four jobs before the problem occurs. The only change that I am aware of that corresponds to this timeframe is that the Administrator password on our Domain was changed, and this machine does log into the Domain.
Any suggestions on where/how to attack this problem?
Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

We need to get some information about your system.
Can you give the following information please:
1) The output from "uname -X"
2) The output from "fileinfo"
3) Is your system a single or dual CPU?

Well, I'd recommend updating to the lastest hotfix for Interix 3.5.
There are a number of fixes from build *.1 that may help.
The lastest available build in a hotfix is *.36.
Contact MS support (by phone or e-mail). They likely will ask for a credit card
but you won't get charged for the hotfix. You only get dinged if it's something that's
not MS's doing. Anyway, tell them you are running W2K3 at SP0 and want to update to SP1
(build *.1 won't run on W2K3/SP1 so you need the hitfix) and that you are experiencing
processes that freeze. Give the yhe system information you've give here too.
They should give you the latest and greatest hotfix (they are cumulative).

Rodney,
I finally have the hotfix that you described, and I have a quick question.
Is Windows 2k3 SP1 required before I install the hotfix? I would like to test the hotfix without installing SP1. I'm trying to keep the changes to the system to a minimum, so that I can tell exactly what fixed the problem.

The hotfixes are always a set of the described fix plus all previous fixes.
There was a kernel change in W2K3/SP1 that generated an earlier hotfix.
So, while I believe the hotfix can be done without SP1, there's the chance
that it will be needed. But you can rollback the hotfix (via add/remove panel)
if need be. The hotfix gets added (or removed) very quickly plus a reboot.

Okay, so I have the hotfix installed on my local machine (Windows XP SP1, SFU 3.5), what version number should I be seeing? You mentioned that the Hotfix was at revision .36, but when I do a "fileinfo" I get this:

Only one file is different. Did I get the wrong hotfix? I was not the one who talked to Microsoft, so I'm not sure exactly what was said.

You should see a full version number of "8.0.1969.36" on all of the files
with fileinfo. Between ".1/.2" and ".36" there are several hotfixes.
".36" contains all previous ones.
The ".1/.2" is specific just for the SP1 update.
It's sily that this is all that was given as a hot fix. Demand the most recent.
