Can named pipes be used to communicate between a Win32 application and an application running under SFU 3.5? What are the options for applications in these two environment to communicate to each other in realtime?

Pipes in Unix and Win32 have some different behaviors. So things do not map 1-to-1.
For some additional information you can read the cat32 man page.
Additional cross-OS communications are: files, sockets, shared memory for Interix 3.0 and later.
With Interix 5.2 and later you can link Win32 API's in with an Interix program. This opens other
communication possibilities, though it's caveat emptor ecause of the different paradigms possibly clashing.
(5.2 == SUA on W2K3/R2)
