When trying to install openssl-dev it seems to go into an infinite loop.
I've upgraded pkg-install, openssl and openssh just fine but installing openssl-dev just pegs the CPU at 100% and never returns ( left for 10mins so far ). Looking at filemon it seems to be looping round a directory scan of some sort

mmm, that's an unpatch Interix 3.5 on an XP system.
I'd suggest getting the latest hotfix for Interix as there may be some other gottas later.
When you installed did you turn on the SetUid and Case Sensitive Filesystem options?
It's looking like Case Sensitive is off.

Do you have a link to the hotfix you mention?

Yes I did turn on Case Sensitive Filesystem options on install but that was a long time ago. It certainly isnt behaving now:

setuid was on but case sensitive was off need to reboot to enable. Will do that and report back if it changes things.

All those stacks show is what is expected: files being moved, directories created,
ownership getting set.
Try doing a "pkg_add -v openssl_dev..." and see what the o/p shows.
It should be much more useful than stack traces.
You should be able to see which file or action is the key point.

On the contrary it is very useful information.
It indicates that Case Sensitive is not ON in the registry.
There are two files: bn_print.3 and BN_print.3 They each cover very different material.

This just indicates it trying hard to work around the lack of case sensitivity.

looks like it was a infinite loop in the location code. When booted with case sensitivity all is good.

FYI, my group has seen this problem repeatedly. It is not a hard error, but happens often. We are running R2 and do have case sensitive names turned on.

I've got a VM snapshot where installing openssl_dev consistently hangs. If you would like to suggest some diagnostics or (somehow) get access to the image, I would be happy to work with you on this problem.

We are running R2 and do have case sensitive names turned on. The command 'pkg_update -L -v openssl_dev' hangs after the following output:

Okay ... here's the scoop: installing Visual Studio 2005 clobbers the case-sensitive setting. After changing the registry key back to case sensitive (HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\kernel\obcaseinsensitive = 0), the openssl_dev installed just fine. Note that I watched this registry value go from 0 to 1 during the Visual Studio install.
