Going way, way, way back in history during the Softway days (pre-MS for Interix)
we found many Kernel bugs that would BSOD and other bugs. The ForkWait kludge came
from a problem experienced on Multi-CPU (MCPU) systems. Everything would run fine
on a single CPU system. But there was a timing problem with the MCPU system that
was out of the control of the subsystem. The ForkWait kludge wasn't ideal to apply
to all systems (that's why it was a kludge). But it was a workable workaround.
Interix went to MS without a fix getting made to the NT kernel.
Was a fix ever done? I was told it was. But I never have had a MCPU since to try it.
At that it's a Xeon processor. Testing for each product is up to each group within
Microsoft. So if no one in the group has a MCPU-Xeon 64-bit...
During the beta phase for SUA on R2 the 64-bit platform was specifically listed
as AMD, not Intel.

woehlkmp,

Are people actually using SUA 5.2?
Not very much, yet, no. I don't think so. The issue I had with setuid was the first time the senior product support staff were I worked with were debugging on SUA for a customer.
I encourage you to call up product support services on this--especially if you can reproduce it reliably. First they will try to reproduce your issue by setting up your configuration with their hardware, but if that doesn't work they will step though code on your box with windbg.
They pss guys have been very good about helping me and you will not be charged for something that is an actual bug. If you are exercising a bug, you may not get an immediate fix but I think it will get fixed. I believe these folks want to put out a good product and are standing behind what they put out.

At any rate, it is, as far as I can tell, a bug in SUA 5.2. Is it SMP-related? Is it Intel SMP related? Possibly.
At any rate, I got so fed up with it that I dropped a copy of Winows 2000 Pro on a box and installed SP4 and SFU 3.5. So far, no problems with that. My 'test case' has been running smoothly for hours, and I made it through the majority of my set of GNU packages (minus OpenSS{L|H}) that I like to have built without hitches, so it looks like SFU 3.5 will be usable. That's a big relief!
I also sent in a request to Microsoft to create a newsgroup for SUA, since they don't have one.
Brieter: I've tried calling Microsoft twice. Aside from the usual headaches of needing an MSDN number before they'll even talk to me, I've been disconnected both times. And I'm not willing to shell out $99 in personal funds to open a case, whether or not I think it will be refunded (if I can find a way to go through a corporate account, that'd be different, but so far no luck). Do you know of any more direct way to get in touch with the right people? (I can't find anything about support specifically for SUA!) If so, I'd be more than happy to try that.

The same PSS/Support group is handling it as for SFU.
SUA/Interix, UNM, NFS, etc. for 2003/R2.
The web pages are apparently getting rearranged with SFU, SUA, NFS, ... and
this apparently is going to take a bit to get updated.

Ok, I'm going to guess that they're missing at the moment, as I don't recall finding support for either. Anyway, thanks again for the info.
