I know ... yet another email about ftp behind a proxy. :)

I have the latest ftp (3.5h) from the Warehouse, and I'm behind an ISA server proxy. I set the ftp_proxy env variable to ftp://{server}:80/ per the ftp manpage. I try to download a package, using the full URL, as a test, and I get this:

ftp: Error retrieving file: 407 Proxy Authentication Required ( The ISA Server requires authorization to fulfill the request. Access to the Web Proxy service is denied. )

Things I've tried:

  • "ftp -f"
  • Setting http_proxy to http://{server}:80/ and downloading using http:// instead of ftp:// in the URL
  • Setting ftp_proxy to http://{server}:80/
  • Setting ftp_proxy to ftp://{user}:{password}@{server}:80/

Alas, no joy. :(

I've already downloaded links and its dependencies and installed them manually. It is set to use the ISA Server as a proxy, and it prompts me for user/password when I go to a URL. Is there a way I can get ftp to do the same, or is there a place I can put the info so ftp can find it and authenticate me to ISA?

Thanks in advance.

I don't use ISA myself.
There is an article at MS about configuring ISA:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=295667
which may be useful to you. If you can set the ISA for direct
connection that would by-pass the whole user/passwd issue.
The stupid protocol is undocumented! grrrr.

You could also try using NTLMAPS after installing the Python package.
Info at http://ntlmaps.sourceforge.net/
I realize this is a bit chicken-and-egg, but it's a possibility.
