Do /tools like rsync take advantage of User Name Mapping?

When rsyncing files from a SCO server to SUA, I’d like the server side SUA rsync to translate the user and group ids based on information defined in User Name Mapping. Or is User Name Mapping only used with NFS?

Thanks,
Ron

UNM is just an NFS thing.
The command line with rsync can be used to specify a different (remote) user.

Hmm, the issue I'm having is with the ownership of the files that rsync creates. The options on the command line only gives us the capability of specifing the user that rsync runs as.

For instance if I were to rsync a folder of home directories from a SCO server to a SUA server, all of the files created in SUA are owned by the rsync user, the local administrator in my case, and not by the user.

From the SCO server I'm running:
rsync --rsh=ssh -cavz --delete /u/fg sua+administrator@cpgdevnet:/u

Has anyone successfully rsynced a folder with a Unix/Linux server while preserving file ownership?

Thanks,
Ron

Here's an update...

Having looked at the source code I can see that rsync needs to be run as user with UID=0, in other words 'root'. I started to hack at the source code, and have made some progress, many files are now being synced corrrectly but I'm still having problems with some. Not having a background in C programming is preventing me from going much further.

If someone out there that would like to continue from where I've left off, I'd be more than happy to share what I've discovered and done with the source.
