I've been using SFU's NFS client on my windows machine to access NFS shares on my linux and solaris servers. However, whenever my windows machine starts up, I'm presented with the following error:
An error occurred while communicating to the NFS server. Make sure that the client for nfs service has started. If the problem persists, make sure client for NFS service can communicate with user name mapping or pcnfs server
I installed SFU on my roommate's computer as well with the exact same settings, and the error does not come up on his machine. Any idea how I can correct this? NFS client and user name mapping services are both set to start up automatically.

At boot time there is a sequence for starting various programs and services/daemons.
First there's a sequence that the kernel goes through and then the subsystems (Win32
and Interix) get started. Each subsystem has a sequence to start its programs.
Usually the default installation of a program places it in a good spot in
the order of startup such that any resource/service/program needed has previously
been started. On your roomate's machine all is well because this order is working;
on your machine NFS and UNM are in the same order position. So on your machine
there must be something in the startup that happens earlier that makes a request
with a certain pathname that would have to be serviced by NFS. What the settings
are with NFS don't really much matter if it hasn't started to make itself available
(provide the service). So you need to find what the program is that's getting
started with a pathname that goes via NFS. Then you need to either change the path
to something on a local disk, or adjust the "culprit" to start after NFS (this is
the dependency setting that can be set with services).

Hmm. Okay, is there any way I can find what order various services start? I've already disabled all startup items and disabled all non-microsoft services, yet the problem persists. If I could find what my startup order is and compare it to my roommate's startup order, I may be able to find and correct the difference.

Anyone know how I can determine the order in which services are starting up in XP Pro? And likewise to adjust said order to prevent this error?

You can adjust the order - especially if the problem service is managed by Interix's service - by using service to tell Windows about the dependency. I know I have done this successfully, but I don't remember the syntax for service or the service names. However, 'man service' or 'service --help' (or is it 'service -?'?) should help.
