Midnight Commander-friendly font for Console.exe - May 24, '06, 7:32:00 PM

I recently got ahold of the program called Console which is sort of like
KDE's konsole and the GNOME terminal where it uses tabs.
I'm having a hard time trying to find a font that looks as good
(or functional) as that used by the win32 console.
It's listed in Properties as only "Raster Fonts".

The screenshot at
http://www.geocities.com/wilmarcdw/misc/console_font.png
(or of course just open your shell and run MC I guess)
shows MC looking good with regard to line-drawing characters.
Plus the typeface of letters is fine by me. Looks bold-ish also.

In Console I've been trying everything but just can't get the look.
The Terminal and System fonts produce bad MC characters.
Heading to TT fonts the main problem is that some work at Regular but
MC reverts to cheaper/broken line-drawing chars when set to Bold.

I almost get there with the Lucida stuff. Lucida Console works but
seems a bit wide.
Lucida Sans Regular works but is much too light/thin at the CLI.
Using Bold and MC downgrades.
The same pretty much goes for others like Bitstream Vera,
the MS Sans Serif, Arial, etc.
Andale Mono is the only one that works as far as console shape and
line-drawing chars go but I just don't like the typeface (though I guess
I can live with it).

(Screenshot of Console.exe w/Andale font which wasn't for this post
but came in handy).

The question I guess is what exactly is being used by win32 consoles
(these Raster Fonts)?

I can't help with your questions, but thought it interesting to hear about the Console program right after I started playing with JP Software's version:

ftp://jpsoft.com/beta/tconsole.exe

I keep 4NT and tcsh on mine.

You can view/change the fonts in the registry:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Console\TrueTypeFont
(need to reboot after any changes).

The Win32 Console is "lucida console" by default.

I'd suggest a reading of the following KB article at MS:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q247815

This took all of 30 seconds to find with Google...

Which I thought was kind of odd since in Properties "Raster Fonts"
is the selected font with Lucida Console being an alternative.
I assumed the former was non-TrueType.

Thanks but um I didn't think it was something to google for since
I was concerned with the program Console 2.00.
[Ah, but then I see my last question was about win32 console]
Funny though since I had tried Lucida Console anyway along with the
others and just couldn't get the look of my win32 console.

Further testing in a win32 console just to verify something...
My current/default win32 console settings: Raster Fonts at 8x12.
Selecting Lucida Console gets 7x12 (too light), selecting bold gets 8x12 (good).
Comparison check - they are not the same but different typefaces.
More serifs with these "Raster Fonts".

Anyway, this is outside of SFU/Interix stuff.
I just got a layout close to what I want in Console2. Lucida Console size 12
in the program was much larger than the win32 console but dropping it down to
10 is close to what I want.

I gave tconsole a try. It has a long way to go compared to Console 2.

I tried the attach/detach feature to see what it was. That wasn't a good idea.
I had Far file manager running at the time so I attached that giving me a messed
up tconsole window with some part of Far visible but not usable.
Detached it and got the same mess in a separate window.
Had to kill the window.

Been using JPSoft's stuff for ages so I'll keep an eye on this to see
how it develops.
