Hi !

I have some questions relatively to the job of a network admin because I am finishing my studies (3 years) in network administration. I have worked on many OS: BSD, Linux, win200 and 2003 server, cisco equipment, etc...

But, I think I have a little gap in my formation and it is about scripting languages.

Can anyone help me to choose a good scripting language for network admin (you know to help me to manage my servers and users, automatise some jobs like creation of users, setting passwords, backup, etc...

Is it best to use vbs, php, or anything else ?

My second question is:
is there any website or book who explains in details with many examples the kind of information i'm looking for ?

Thanks for your answers

Well, for the Unix world you should know shell scripting (sh).
It's the grand-daddy of them all and always in use. As a side effect
you'll need to know how to use several of the utilities well (awk,
grep, sed). Next is Perl: created orginally just for admins.
For automating on Unix with backups, etc. then cron is good
to know. A good starting text on Unix admin'ing is "Unix System
Administration Handbook".

In the Win32 World MS is going with Monad/PowerShell in the long term.
So if you're going to admin Windows, get to know it.
Perl is still good with Windows too (ActiveState Perl's is Win32).
