Check that the /etc/resolv.conf file has a nameserver entry with a valid DNS IP.

That looks like a hotmail error, assuming is a valid address. Have you tried mailing to a different (and more normal) service?

(By "more normal" I mean a server that will give a proper error message. Does "550 Invalid recipient/sender mailing address" refer to the sender or recipient address, or does it object to using the same address for both? In any case, it appears that your system is communicating properly with hotmail's server.)

Thanks for your reply here is something else:
I have SFU 3.5 setup on a client server.
If I email to the outside world I get that error everytime.
However if I put an email address for local domain, ie somebody that works at client site, they are able to get the test email.

mail -s "test"
.

I think the problem may be due to both SBC and Hotmail looking for you to login before sending mail. If you don't mind, would you send me a test message to ? I'm curious if the problem is due to a STMP AUTH requirement in the servers you are trying...

Is there a way to point to a specific external smtp server?

I think you need to check with your ISP or network admin. That error message did not come from hermes.walkereng.com. Its equivalent would be:

"550 sorry, no mailbox here by that name. (#5.1.1)"

(I went through qmail-smtpd.c and that was the only 550 error listed.)

Looks like somebody is re-routing smtp traffic through his server, which presumably requires a login.

Will do I will check with network guys.

However, If i am able to point to an external smtp server that doesnt require login would this then work? And if so what do I need to change in SFU to point it to a external smtp server.

Look in /etc/mail/sendmail.cf for

# "Smart" relay host (may be null)
DS

and add the server's FQDN right after the DS. e.g.:

DShermes.walkereng.com

(I'm a qmail user, so definitely subject to correction on anything to do with sendmail.)

I think what eperea is saying is that there is a firewall filtering out
port 25 (SMTP) and spoofing a connection. So there's no problem with sendmail
from a technical viewpoint. From within your local network you may have an SMTP
hub (relay host). You need to find out which machine that is and then adjust
the configuration file to run your e-mail throught it. Your network isn't allowing
you direct SMTP connections to the outside world.

Thanks for your help all. We solved the problem. The internet filter at the client only alows output emails from certain servers. They added this server to the list and I am able to send outbound emails.
